Design & Technology
Vision
At Broad Oak we want children to make sense of and gain expertise of planning and designing processes through first-hand experiences. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Through design and technology, our children will be prepared to participate in an ever-changing technical world.
Intent
Our Design and Technology curriculum enables pupils to use their prior knowledge, skills and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of different contexts. Pupils not only acquire a broad range of subject knowledge but also draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Along with all of the other cross curricular areas our curriculum identifies opportunities to promote writing. We deliver a high quality design and technology education that ensures all pupils become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Our Design and Technology curriculum develops children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials including food. We instil creativity through this subject and pupils have the opportunity to combine this with practical skills to ensure they complete the design process from start to finish.
Our teaching enables children to:
- Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
- Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
- Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
- Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook
